Questions about price, time and wood
The questions we hear most, answered plainly.
Pricing
How much will my floor cost?
It depends on the subfloor, the wood, the design, the finish and the house, so we price each project on its own. Tell us about yours and we will give you a real answer.
What does the price cover?
The time and hands that go into each stage. What goes into a floor walks through it.
Timelines
How soon can you start?
We take on a limited number of projects each year, so it depends on the calendar. Ask us early.
Why does a floor take time?
Wood needs time to reach balance with the house before it goes down, and each coat of finish needs time to cure. Those steps cannot be hurried without showing later.
Process
What happens first?
You tell us about the project, and we look at the floor and the conditions it sits in. For finishes, we make samples for you to judge in your own rooms.
Will the house be livable?
That depends on the job and the finish. We tell you what to expect before we start, and clients often mention how tidy we keep the site.
Maintenance
How do I care for a finished floor?
Keep grit off it, protect it from standing water, and follow the care instructions for your particular finish. We will tell you what yours needs.
Can my old floors be saved?
Often. We resand existing hardwood, and we have refinished a 140-year-old Victorian and floors marked by the family dogs. Send us photos and we will tell you what we see.
Species
Which wood should I choose?
It depends on the look you want, how the room is used and what the rest of the house is doing. We will bring samples and talk it through.
Finishes
What is the difference between a film finish and an oil?
A film finish forms a protective layer on the surface. A penetrating oil soaks into the wood and looks very natural, but asks for regular care. Our Journal has more.
Service area
Where do you work?
